Delta strain spread reaches 98% in Latvia

The proportion of the Covid-19 Delta strain Latvia has reached 97.9%, Health Minister Daniels Pavļuts said at the government meeting August 24.

The Delta type of the virus was detected in around 18% of tested samples at the beginning of July, while its prevalence reached 79% by the middle of the month. On August 11, however, it was reported that 95.3% of the samples had already been identified as having the Delta strain.

For the fifth consecutive week, the number of new cases of Covid-19 has been increasing in Latvia. During the last week, from 16 to 22 August, the number of cases detected in Covid-19 increased by 31.7%.

In the last two weeks, from 9 to 22 August, high increases in morbidity continue to persist among children aged between 0 to 9 years and 10 to 19 years. The incidence of Covid-19 is also increasing in other age groups.
