Pirola subtype of Covid-19 found in Latvia

In three municipalities of Latvia – Saldus, Jūrmala and Madona – the monitoring of wastewater has shown the new variant of the Covid-19 Omicron type “Pirola”, said the scientific institute BIOR on November 15.

Jurijs Perevoščikovs, an epidemiologist at the Disease Prevention and Control Center, told LSM.lv - evidence suggests that “Pirola” does not lead to more severe clinical symptoms of Covid-19. “Most likely a more infectious type of virus,” he added.

The information available so far suggests that “Pirola” does not cause the illness in severe form and that it can both be detected and treated with tests and medications designed so far for Covid-19.

The “Pirola” variant of Covid-19 was first reported on July 24.  While it is not known in which country this type of virus broke out, “Pirola” was initially reported in Israel and Denmark.

The who said in a report in mid-August it was currently monitoring more than ten variants of COVID-19 and their origins.

Monitoring data show that the prevalence of Covid-19 disease and the number of SARS-CoV-2 RNA virus particles in sewage has been increasing in Latvia since the end of August. This is also confirmed by monitoring from the Disease Prevention and Control Center, which shows an increase in Covid-19 cases in inpatients, as well as the onset of circulation of the type A flu virus and a slightly increasing intensity of flu spread.
