Hospitalized patient number up by 21% last week in Latvia

Over the past week, the number of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 rose by 21%, with 1,526 patients in hospitals by the end of the week, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) said November 1.

SPKC reported that on average, 175 people per day were brought to hospitals last week. The number of patients with severe symptoms has also increased by 25%, reaching 191 patients.

The total number of Covid-19 cases detected decreased by 2%. The SPKC indicated that it was too early to draw conclusions on the stabilization of the situation in relation to the small reduction.

With school screening resumed, the number of tests performed increased, 22,217 tests were conducted on average per day (17,515 the week before), while an average of 2,375 new cases were detected per day (2,422 before).

Of all tests performed, 36% (55,333 tests) involved screening of educational establishments, while 64% (100,185 tests) were conducted in the rest of the population. Of the positive cases of Covid-19, 6% (1,009 infected) were associated with the screening of educational establishments, while 94% (15,557 infected) in the rest of the population.

11,909 people or 72% of those infected last week were not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or had not yet completed a vaccination course, while 4,657 people had been vaccinated, which is 28% of the total in the last week. Covid-19 infection was detected 2.4 times more frequently in unvaccinated than in fully vaccinated people.
