Over 500 Covid patients in Latvia's hospitals

Currently, the infection rate with Covid-19 is high in Latvia, as evidenced by the number of patients in hospitals, said the director of the Department of Risk Analysis and Prevention of the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC), epidemiologist Jurijs Perevoščikovs, in an interview with Latvian Television December 11.

About 500 patients are currently in hospitals with Covid-19 infection.

Explained that the high incidence of Covid-19 is due to seasonal factors, although the incidence was higher during the same time of year during the pandemic years. However, the concentration of the virus in the sewage shows that the figures recorded last season have been exceeded.

At the same time, Perevoščikovs emphasized that Covid-19 is not causing severe symptoms for most of the population, but despite this, the total number of patients in hospitals is increasing - it rose by 12% last week, with the total number of people infected with Covid-19 in hospitals exceeding 500.

About half of that number have Covid as the primary diagnosis, but patients are being discharged slower than new infected patients arrive.

The number of Covid-19 patients in severe condition is also increasing - there were 12 in the past week. The death toll is also rising - 23 patients died with Covid-19 last week.

“Not everyone directly from Covid, but this is often a contributing factor,” the epidemiologist noted, explaining that chronic illnesses are activated and exacerbated due to the virus.

Other viruses are also seen circulating and particularly the incidence of respiratory syncytial virus, which is dangerous for children and older people, has increased over the past two weeks, the epidemiologist noted.
