New record with nearly 6,000 cases of Covid-19 Friday

On January 21, 2022, Latvia recorded 5,972 new Covid-19 cases, according to the latest figures from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). This is the highest case count ever registered in a single day.

Of that total, 2,531 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 3,441 were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 324,999.

Of 25,399 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 23.5% were positive. The 14-day cumulative morbidity rate per 100,000 population jumped into uncharted territory from 1895.1 Thursday to 2111.4 Friday. 

The death statistics are to be reported tomorrow, Saturday January 22, due to 'technical issues' according to SPKC.

Thursday data from the National Health Service show 672 patients being treated in hospital with 88 patients admitted and 63 discharged during the last 24 hours. 82 patients are displaying serious symptoms.


In the other Baltic states, Estonia had a record-high 4,480 new cases and 5 deaths confirmed during the last 24 hours while Lithuania had 6,478 new cases and 12 deaths.
