Rīga hospital to have 'smartest' pharmacy in Baltic

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The Rīga East Clinical Hospital (RAKUS) is planning to construct the most state-of-the-art pharmacy in the Baltic. The pharmacy will have a smart medicine cabinet and pneumatic mail that can send medicines to any department within seconds, Latvian Television reported on November 27.

The new pharmacy has been built between the Gaiļezers hospital and the Latvian Oncology Centre. It has four floors, 2300 square meters, and an overhead tunnel will connect it with the hospital, the new emergency clinic, and the Oncology Center.

A special storage system has already been installed. The storage units are located on several floors. But the biggest pride will be a robot, or an automated medicine cabinet, which will sort all medicines and deliver them. Medicinal products shall be issued subject to the expiry date of the medicinal product and other parameters.

Grey pipes snaking through all the floors are pneumatic mail. In critical cases, it will be possible to receive medicines from the pharmacy within seconds. All hospital pharmacy workers, a total of fifty people, will gradually move to this building. The only exception is the mixing of medicines that will continue to be done automatically at the Oncology Center.
