'Doctor Clowns' ask for public help to heal young patients

The society “Dr. Klauns” launches another charity promotion where "Doctor Clowns" go to small patients to help them overcome stress in hospitals across Latvia, the organizers said on March 21.

The society “Dr. Klauns” has been operating as a public charity since 2012, and its representatives -- 35 professional medical clowns -- travel daily to the children's clinical university hospital and other hospitals in Latvia to help children psychologically, making it easier for small patients to get through the day while they stay in a medical facility.

Anyone can participate in the act and support the clowns by making a donation on the website www.drklauns.lv or buying the red clown nose at Rimi stores throughout Latvia.

Even for an adult, hospitals are stressful, but it could be even harder for a child. The incomprehensible and often painful procedures, waiting hours, an alien environment, the unknown - all of which cause great alarm, fear, and fatigue. So, in this space of complex emotions, doctors clowns come in to help small patients and their parents survive those emotions and make the hospital atmosphere easier and more human.

The society “Dr. Klauns” exists only thanks to donations – and any, even small, donation will help children meet their doctor clown. Donations collected during the charity's campaign will help doctors clowns continue to visit small patients in seven hospitals throughout Latvia, start a new school of doctor clowns – it will find much-needed new colleagues, as well as continue additional projects – work with children with special needs and co-operation with doctor clowns in Ukraine.

An important day as part of the charity's promotion will be April 1 - Special Doctor Clown Red Nose Day. Anyone who believes in the work of doctor clowns and wants to support it can put on the red nose, take a picture, and post this picture on their social networks, adding a #smaidsradasmaidu (Smile Creates Smile) hashtag.

The society's “Dr. Klauns” charity act, “Help Dr. Clown be where he's awaited!” will run from March 21 to May 31.
