Weekly Covid-19 case count grew by 38% in Latvia

From 23 to 29 August, the number of Covid-19 cases detected increased by 38%, according to data published by Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on August 30.

Last week, extensive screening tests were launched in connection with the new school year. Of all the 102,816 tests performed in total, 69% were related to screening of educational establishments and 31% or 47,126 tests were others. Of the newly identified positive cases of Covid-19, 8% or 101 infected were associated with the screening at schools, while 92% or 1,173 infected people were among the rest of the population.

In the last week, an average of 21,420 tests were conducted daily (the week before – 8,389), with an average of 182 new cases per day (previously - 132).

The number of people hospitalized with Covid-19 increased by 55%. On average 111 people were treated at hospitals per day. The figure was 71 the week before.

A further increase in the number of new cases of Covid-19 among children up to 19 years has been observed and an increase has also been observed in other age groups.

1,077 people or 85% of all infected people were not vaccinated against Covid-19, or had not yet completed the vaccination course, while 197 or 15% had been vaccinated. The virus infection was found 3.3 times more frequently in unvaccinated than in fully vaccinated people.

The number of imported Covid-19 cases (81) decreased slightly in the previous week, accounting for 6.4% of all cases in Latvia. Between week 29 and 34 of the year (19/07 to 29/08), the most infected people arrived in Latvia from Turkey (84 cases), Russia (51), UK (47), Iraq (40), Spain (37), Georgia (27), Lithuania (22), Germany (18), Ireland (17), France (16), Belarus (15), Netherlands (15).
