On Friday November 21, flags across Riga and beyond will fly with black ribbons attached in memory of the 54 victims of the Zolitude supermarket disaster, which took place exactly a year ago on November 21, 2013.
Riga City Council approved the measure at a meeting Thursday which means all municipal buildings in the capital, including residential buildings, will have to fly the Latvian flag along with the black ribbon, a traditional way of showing mourning.
Friday itself will be marked by a series of ceremonies in memory of the victims of the disaster starting with President Andris Berzins laying flowers at the site of the catastrophic roof cave-in and culminating in another ceremony at 5.41 p.m. - the exact time at which the disaster occurred.
