Lowest number of births in 100 years recorded in December in Latvia

Data published January 20 by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in December 2020, the number of births was the lowest in the past 100 years.

17.5 thousand births were registered in Latvia, which is 1.3 thousand or 6.9 % less than in 2019 (18.8 thousand).

Since July, the number of births has been decreasing every month - in the second half of last year, 11.4 % fewer children were born than in July – December 2019. In December 2020, 1 273 births were registered in the civil status registry offices, which is 17.2 % less than in the corresponding month of the year 2019. This is the lowest number of births in December in the last century.

Preliminary data show that in 2020, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 11.2 thousand. In December 2020 there were 1 905 deaths more than births.

In 2020, 10.7 thousand marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 17 % less than in 2019 (12.9 thousand). 628 marriages were registered in December, which is 110 marriages or 15 % less than in the corresponding month of 2019.

On 1 January 2021, the estimated population in Latvia was 1 million 894 thousand.
