Twice as many deaths as births in first half of 2021 in Latvia

Provisional data published August 12 by the Central Statistical Bureau show that in the first half of this year, 16,778 deaths were registered, which is 2,759 more than in the six months of last year (14,019) and twice as many deaths as births.

The number of live births in Latvia is declining for the fifth year in a row. In 2020, 1,234 fewer children were born than in 2019 (17,552 and 18,786 children, respectively). Also, in the first six months of 2021, 8,351 children were registered, which is 606 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2020.

Natural growth in Latvia remains negative. In the first six months of 2021, the population of the country decreased by 8,427 people (in the corresponding period of 2020 - by 5,062).

In the first six months of 2021, 3 724 marriages were registered, which is 135 marriages more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. However, the pre-pandemic figure of over 4 000 marriages in six months has not yet been reached.
