Polish man smuggling Iraqi citizens from Latvia detained

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Lithuanian border guards have detained seven Iraqis and a Polish citizen, who was taking the Iraqi citizens illegally from Lithuania to Poland in a minivan, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service told BNS Monday.

The minivan had Polish license plates and was pulled over near the Poland-Lithuania border.

The driver, a 34-year-old Polish citizen, provided his ID and car registration documents.

The passengers – three men, two women and two minors – turned out to be citizens of Iraq, who had asylum seeker documents issued in Latvia.

Under the law, they are not allowed to leave Latvia and travel to Western Europe until their asylum applications are processed.
