Slippery roads lead to a large number of injuries

Influx of patients to the hospital for trauma and orthopedics has increased by up to 70% due to the weather conditions, hospital's representative Uģis Zariņš told Latvian Radio February 9.

People either slip on the sidewalks or hurt themselves while enjoying the snow.

Although there are specialists in the hospital who have to be in self-isolation or who are sick with Covid-19, the hospital is currently coping with the large influx of patients. Zariņš also said that there are currently a large number of patients arriving at the hospital from the regions.

“In regional hospitals, this situation is quite difficult, because they are even more congested with Covid-19 patients, so we are treating some here in Traumatology and orthopedics hospital,” said Uģis Zariņš.

“Then when the situation on the street is more dramatic, then the number of patients is rising proportionally. There are those who slip on the street and those who enjoy the so-called joys of winter – sledding, skiing, skating. If the streets are slippery that day in Rīga, there will be many broken hands that day,” the hospital spokesman said.
