On Tuesday the state supported granting bonuses of €1.051m to Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics laureates, reported LSM's Latvian-language service via LETA.

Up until now performance bonuses were only granted for medals in the olympics, but as Latvia went medalless at the 2016 Rio Olympics the rules were amended to award those placing 4th to 6th in their disciplines as well.

Two of Latvia's olympians placed 4th, and one olympian took fifth place in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

While the paralympians took four medals home to Latvia. Another paralympian ranked fifth and another ranked sixth in their respective disciplines.

The bonuses will be granted not only to the olympians but also their trainers and in some cases support personnel.
