Participants come from Lithuania, the US, Canada, Finland and Germany as well as Latvia and will be working to improve a range of skills, particularly in the areas of combat support and integration at brigade and battalion level.
"Summer Shield" exercises have taken place in Latvia since 2004. Originally it was a battalion-level exercise and its main task was to prepare units for participation in a coalition forces operation in Iraq, but it has since grown and become more diverse.
Residents are asked to keep their eyes open for military vehicles and let them pass as necessary and also not to be worried by the sight of military planes and helicopters in the skies.
Locals around the main Adazi military base outside Riga are particularly reminded not to stray onto the ranges.
