Thaw over weekend to be followed by flood next week

A major thaw will begin during the holidays in Latvia, which will cause flooding in many rivers next week, according to forecasts.

In Kurzeme, thaw will begin in the first half of Saturday night, some frost is expected elsewhere in Latvia, but temperatures will rise and range from +1 C to 6 C in all of Latvia on Saturday. It will rain in the afternoon and evening, which will accelerate the melting of snow. On Sunday, both night and day, temperatures will be within +2 C and +8 C, and there will be moments of heavy rain on Sunday afternoon and evening.

Melting will continue early next week, temperatures will mostly be within +1 C and +7 C, Tuesday places up to +8 C and +9 C. Rain is expected at times.

Snow will have melted by Tuesday in Kurzeme, Zemgale, and western Vidzeme, including Rīga.

Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center has issued a warning that flood will start in the Kurzeme and Zemgale rivers on Monday, December 18. On Tuesday, floods will also begin in some Vidzeme and Latgale rivers. There is no risk of major flooding yet. Mostly uninhabited fields or sparsely populated areas will be flooded. Some sections of roads may be flooded.

Current forecasts show that Latvia is likely to get colder again in the second half of next week and snow may fall again by Christmas, however, forecasts can still change.
