Mostly, light snow is expected, in some places it will snow moderately in the southern part of the country. It will also rain in Kurzeme and in some places in Zemgale.
The roads could be slippery in certain sections, while in the evening the roads will become icy in many places.
Moderate easterly winds will remain with gusts of 8-13 meters per second. The air temperature will be in the range -1 to +4 degrees Celsius, but the unplesant wind will make it feel considerably colder.
Light precipitation is expected in Riga during the day, a thin snow cover may form in the evening. With a moderate easterly wind, the air temperature will be 2 degrees, in the evening it will fluctuate around zero.
The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC) has issued a yellow warning (potential danger) for prolonged snowfall in the south-eastern regions of Latvia.
By Thursday afternoon, it was snowing and the roads were icy in the vicinity of Jēkabpils, Daugavpils and Krāslava, so drivers are asked to be careful and choose an appropriate driving speed and distance, Latvian State Roads (Latvijas valsts ceļi, LB) said.
Slippery road sections are being sprinkled with anti-slip materials. In order to improve the driving conditions, 32 technical units are out and about.
Difficult driving conditions on the country's main highways are:
- on the Daugavpils highway (A6) section from Jēkabpils to Daugavpils;
- on the section of the Daugavpils highway (A6) from Daugavpils to Izvalda;
- on the Grebneva–Rēzekne–Daugavpils–Lithuanian border road (A13) in the section from Špogi to the Lithuanian border near Medumi.
The winter road maintenance season on the national road network starts on October 16 and lasts until April 15.
Temperatures are expected to rise again at the start of next week.
