Cold to climax this week in Latvia

Take note – story published 6 years ago

If it's not already cold enough for you, we have good news: it's about to get even colder.

The lowest temperature is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, when daytime temperatures will not be warmer than -10 C to -15 C on the coast and -18 degrees in eastern districts.

On Tuesday and Wednesday nights the chill should reach its climax with eastern areas of the country again faring worse than elsewhere with temperatures as low as - 27 C. Western and southern parts of Latvia will be a few degrees warmer.

The cold will be made to feel even more unpleasant by strong northeasterly winds with gusts reaching 10-15 meters per second.

The freeze will gradually diminish in the second half of the week, but with easterly winds continuing, night-time temperatures will still be in the range of -10 to -19 C.

Major changes are expected on Sunday or Monday, when southerly and southwesterly winds will take over, bringing warmer air systems with them. Around 4-5- March temperatures may once again rise above freezing point.
