According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVGMC), air temperature at 5 in the morning ranged from -14 C in Kolka and -15 C in Ventspils airport to -27 C and -29 C in Daugavpils, Madona, Skrīveri, Staļģene, Rēzekne and Zosēni.
The lowest air temperature has been recorded in the vicinity of Kārsava and Zilupe at -31 C.
The Rīga vicinity and Zemgale are experiencing cold down to -27 C, Kurzeme to -24 C.
There is virtually no wind, air quality has reached poor levels in places, and the sky remains mostly clear.
In Rīga, temperatures in the city center range around -20 C, but the airport observation station recorded -27 C - the lowest air temperature since February 5, 2012.
