Weather week: freeze gradually turning to thaw

This week will bring a gradual thaw from the currently frigid conditions, according to the latest forecasts.

On Monday there will be fresh snowfall in many parts of the country but temperatures will be slightly above the very low thermometer readings of recent days at  - 8 Celsius to - 13 C inland and -4 C to - 7 C along the coast. Winds will be gentle.

On Mondy night and Tuesday conditions will be similar, with night-time temperatures as low as - 20 C but Wednesday will bring noticeably warmer temperatures in Kurzeme in particular where by Wednesday afternoon, the air temperature is expected to reach 0 to + 2 C. The rest of the country will also enter thaw mode on Thursday, when many districts can expect temperatures above freezing point and as high as + 4 C.

Next weekend the temperature will fluctuate around zero, mostly in the range of -2 to + 4 degrees. Light rain and sleet is expected, with occasional flurries of snow.

The prevailing winds this week will be southerly. Gentle at first, they will be stronger on Wednesday and Thursday.
