Jaunpilī sākta pils atjaunošana pēc vētras postījumiem

Jaunpils begins castle renovation after August storms

After the damage caused by the storm in August, restoration works have begun at the Jaunpils Castle restore the roof, windows, and castle facade, Zemgale regional television reported December 14.

The roof, windows, and the facade suffered the greatest damage.

"There will be new tiles and a membrane is also laid underneath the tiles, so there is no such binder as there was 100 years ago. Right now there will be this membrane and tiles. Consequently, the roof of the castle will also be safer and moisture-resistant and I think these materials will be more durable in themselves,” said Kristīne Liepiņa, head of Jaunpils Castle.

The total cost of repairs is EUR 905 thousand. The insurer will cover half of that amount and the remaining money was given by the municipality and state, as well as donors.

"It is impossible to insure such an ancient cultural monument 100%. We are happy with the outcome of two months of long and complex negotiations with insurers. Municipal management and specialists worked for two months on talks with the insurance company to find the best solution," explained Baiba Rusa, manager of Jaunpils civil parish.

The final cost of repairing the interior spaces damaged by the roof condition is still being calculated as they will be turned to after the roof is repaired.

A charity concert was also held to restore the castle.
