Latvia remembers Ukraine victims on May 9

May 9, 2022 has been determined the day of commemoration of victims in Ukraine due to the Russian war initiated in its territory.

As usual, May 9 also marks Europe Day, the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950.

This year, a solidarity and commemoration flashmob is also being arranged. At 12:00 and at 19:55 everyone is invited to hold a moment of silence for the people of Ukraine, which will also be broadcast on LTV, ReTV and TV24, then open the windows and play the national anthems of Latvia and of Ukraine. The flashmob is hashtagged on social media as #ieelpobrīvību (inhale freedom).

It is prohibited to organize public entertainment events and celebrations, as well as to shoot fireworks even in private territory.

The State Security Service has asked residents not to visit Soviet occupation-glorifying monuments. State Police will be on the lookout for people carrying Russian symbols, like the flag or George ribbon.
