'Rock Song Festival' to take place this weekend in Džūkste, Latvia

On June 29, the first "Rock Song Festival" will take place in Džūkste, Tukums district, with the participation of well-known rock soloists - Jānis Buķelis, Bukums un Frišfelds, Atis Ieviņš - as well as local choirs and ensembles, as well as the new band "Garu pagrabs", the organizers of the festival informed.

The program of the Rock Song Festival will include well-known songs such as "Dzelzsgriezējs", "Pēdējā pietura", "Ziņģe Par Bailēm", "Nāc Dejot", "Balāde par Gulbi", "Putni bez Spārniem" and many others.

"Rock music has historically played an important role in Latvian culture and in strengthening Latvian identity. We have something to be proud of, something to show! This year the first Rock Song Festival will take place in Džūkste, and I hope that this Rock Song Festival will be the beginning of a good tradition that could grow in size and breadth. The old folk songs and nowadays what we call classical music used to be a kind of rock music," says Uģis Higo Glāzītis, representative of the Latvian Rock Music Association.

"We prepared for the Rock Song Festival with great responsibility and learned the songs as close as possible to the original performances, thus paying tribute to their authors. By getting to know what makes these songs special, we ourselves gained invaluable growth," says Garu pagrabs.

Local groups such as the Mixed Vocal Ensemble of the Džūkste Culture House, the Irlava Culture House Women's Choir "Irlava" and the Šlokenbekas Manor Children's Vocal Ensemble "Dūkurīši" will also take part in the festivities. Locals say that the "Rock Song Festival" will be the biggest event of the summer and are happy about the revival of traditions. In 1871, under the leadership of J. Bētiņš, 170 choirs sang in Džūkste, and later, in the early 2000s, the rock festival "Viesulis" was held.

Families are invited to the "Rock Song Festival" - the festival will start at 16 with a walk around Džūkste, with the participation of local entrepreneurs. At 17, the instrumental-vocal ensemble "Teic balsis" will warm up the audience, at 18 a festive concert will take place, and at 20.30 - a green party/disco with DJ Senais.
