Famous basketball win for Latvia over mighty Spain

The Latvian national women's basketball team opened this year's European Women's Basketball Championships (EuroBasket 2023) by stunning powerful Spain 67:63 (17:15, 20:13, 18:19, 12:16) on June 15.

This was the first ever win at EuroBasket for Latvia against the four-time European champions. 

Anete Šteinberga led the way for the Latvian team with 22 points and six rebounds, Kitija Laksa scored 17 points, while Aleksa Gulbe had 14 points and seven rebounds. Laura Gil was the top scorer for Spain with 20 points and ten rebounds.

In another Group A match earlier in the day, Montenegro defeated Greece 74:69.

Latvia will play its next Group A match against Greece on Friday, and will conclude the group stage on Sunday against Montenegro.

This is the 10th EuroBasket that Latvia is competing in, with the best result achieved in 2007, when Latvia finished in fourth place.

Tel Aviv, Israel, is co-hosting this year's EuroBasket together with the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.
