Former basketball player, politician Kārlis Strēlis dies

At the age of 80, former basketball player and Saeima deputy Kārlis Strēlis passed away on Friday, according to the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS).

Strēlis made his VEF master team debut in the early sixties. In 1963 he was included in the Riga ASK, soon became captain of the team, and in 1964 he contributed to the last great success of the famous Riga ASK team – winning silver medals at the USSR Championship.

Strēlis played in the ASK until 1978, also accumulating the most games in Latvia's national team before independence (137).

Strēlis was elected to the 8th Saeima from the Jaunais Laiks party, and to the Rīga City Council twice.

Our condolences to Kārlis Strēlis' family, friends, and colleagues.
