The State Employment Agency (NVA) has received eight notifications of mass lay-offs, affecting 699 to 724 employees.

That's what the agency's PR department told the LETA news agency March 20.

Areas affected by the layoffs include transport, storage, as well as hospitality, food, wholesale and processing industries.

The number of unemployed people registered at the agency stands at 58,731, up 674 from a week ago.

On March 19, Finance Minister Jānis Reirs said that state support for mitigating the crisis caused by the Covid-19 outbreak has reached more than €2 billion.

State support for employees in the industries hardest hit by the downtime is to range from €60 million to €200 million, depending on the industries that will receive support.

Earlier this week NVA head Evita Simsone told LTV that services are cut and clients are expected at the agency only after April 14.
