Baltic, Ukrainian public media sign cooperation memorandum

The heads of public service media of the Baltic States and Ukraine have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation during the General Assembly of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Cyprus on July 4 and 5.

The Memorandum aims to foster solidarity and unity among EBU member organizations in order to improve media resilience to the growing challenges of business continuity. The agreement provides for the establishment of mutual support mechanisms to enable the public service media of the Baltic States and Ukraine - Latvian Television, Latvian Radio, Estonian ERR, Lithuanian LRT, and Ukrainian Suspilne - to ensure business continuity in the event of an emergency or state of exception in which a media outlet is unable to fulfil its responsibilities in its home country.

Ivars Priede, Chairman of the Board of Latvian Television, was quoted: "At a time when an unjust and brutal Russian-led war is taking place right next door in Ukraine, it is important to stand together against evil. Our unity and solidarity as Europe's public service media serves as a deterrent and strengthening force, contributing not only to our own security but to the security of Europe as a whole."

To help address immediate business continuity issues, the agreement provides for the exchange of information and knowledge, possible access to media communication channels and platforms for public information, exchange of technical resources, logistics, and other mutual support.

Inviting to join the Memorandum, the public media leaders of the Baltic States and Ukraine have also approached other EBU member organizations for cooperation.
The Memorandum was signed by:
- Ivars Priede, Chairman of the Board of Latvian Television;
- Una Klapkalne, Chairwoman of the Board of Latvian Radio;
- Erik Roose, Chairman of the Board of ERR;
- Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė, Director General of LRT;
- Mykola Chernotytskyi, Chairman of the Board of Suspilne Ukraine.
