Russia expels two Latvian diplomats

On Thursday, a note on the expulsion of two Latvian diplomats was submitted to the Latvian Chargé d'Affaires at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diāna Eglīte, Press Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed to LETA.

She said that the Foreign Ministry would decide on further action in response to Russia's announcement on the expulsion of two Latvian diplomats. Eglīte also said that the names of expelled diplomats are not disclosed.

As reported at the time, a month ago, former Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) decided to declare a diplomat of the Russian Embassy an undesirable person.

On March 27, Oleg Zikov, Russia's Chargé d'affaires pro tempore, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry for explanations regarding the embassy's long-standing unacceptable and provocative public communication, which is in clear violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

In view of this, the Foreign Minister placed a diplomat on the list of persons undesirable for Latvia, who was to leave Latvia by the end of the day on April 10. It was expected that Russia would respond likewise.
