European Parliament elections take place in Latvia

Polls opened across Latvia June 8 for the main voting day in the 2024 European Parliament elections.

Polling stations will be open from 08:00 until 20:00, giving voters a full 12 hours in which to express their democratic will unless they have already done so during three days of advance voting.

The locations of the polling stations are listed here. On June 8, 50 polling stations will also be open to Latvian citizens abroad, mainly at embassies and consulates.

By the time polls opened on Saturday, 8.37% of those eligible to vote had already done so during advance voting. That figure was below the 11% recorded five years ago at the same stage, suggesting that unless Saturday proves busier than expected, turnout could well be on the low side, despite the attempts by officials and political parties to gee voters into action.

Latvia will send 9 Members to the European Parliament after the elections – an increase on the 8 MEPs it had during the outgoing parliamentary term.

The publication of live national results and seat projections will start on Sunday 9 June from 19:00 Rīga time at the earliest. A first aggregated projection of the composition of the European Parliament as a whole can be expected shortly after 21:15 according to the official Europe-wide results portal.

Before then of course, there will be exit estimations, assumptions, projections and wishful thinking aplenty – so it's probably best to concentrate on enjoying the rest of your weekend and waiting for the actual results before jumping to too many conclusions. However, if you really can't get enough coverage, our colleagues on the LSM Latvian language service will be pumping out plenty of material to satisfy your need.
