In his opinion, it is not normal that every step in Latvia requires an amendment to the law or a Cabinet of Ministers regulation. Moreover, changes often take place only after the involvement of the President. Rinkēvičs stressed that excessive bureaucracy in Latvia is holding back economic development.
President Edgars Rinkēvičs himself proposed to freeze the remuneration of the boards of state capital companies. This will also be discussed in the Saeima on Tuesday, October 22. At the same time, the salaries of the members of the Saeima will not be frozen but will increase by 2.6%, as in the rest of the public sector. Asked why changes often happen only when the president gets involved, Rinkēvičs said in an interview with Latvian Television's "Rīta Panorāma" program that it is not right for the president to solve every problem.
He stressed that "if common sense does not work, the President has several tools at his disposal". These include the legislative initiative and the veto.
"We are stuck in "super-normativism". We have the feeling that if it is not written in the law that you can hold a coffee with your left hand instead of your right hand, then it is almost impossible. We need amendments to the law or Cabinet regulations on every issue. This was not the case in the past," Rinkēvičs claimed.
