Border guards among rigged procurement suspects

Take note – story published 5 years ago

The Internal Security Bureau (IDB) has detained five people, including two officials of the Central Administration of the Latvian State Border Guard, on suspicions of illegalities in public procurement, the bureau said, according to the LETA newswire.

According to Diana Petersa, an aide to the IDB chief, the officials had abused their official powers to create pre-conditions for certain companies to win a number of public tenders, which resulted in unfair competition and major losses to the Latvian state. The tenders in question were held for the equipment to be used in the protection of Latvia's eastern border, and the contracts were worth several millions of EUR.

As part of the criminal proceeding, the IDB carried out more than ten searches and seized evidence to the above crimes.

The detained Border Guard officials have been taken into custody but the rest of the suspects have been released for now on certain conditions pending the trial.

The Internal Security Bureau investigates crimes committed by the officers and employees of the organizations supervised by the Interior Ministry.
