Two Latvian citizens detained for illegal migrant transportation

On Saturday, 20 April, two Latvian citizens were detained for transporting persons who had illegally crossed the state border, the State Border Guard said.

Border guards, in cooperation with State Police officers, stopped a Citroen Berlingo driven by a Latvian citizen in the Skrudaliena parish of Augšdaugava municipality. During a document check, three persons were found in the car without travel documents, valid visas or residence permits.

A short time later, during the investigation, another Latvian citizen in a BMW was detained at the same location on suspicion of assisting migrants.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the Latvian citizens for knowingly providing a person with an opportunity to stay illegally in Latvia if such an opportunity is provided to two or more persons (Article 285.1, second paragraph, of the Criminal Law).
