Taxi driver caught transporting illegal migrants in Latvia

On Saturday, April 6, a Latvian citizen was detained in the Krāslava municipality for transporting persons who had illegally crossed the State border, said the State Border Guard.

Border guards, in cooperation with State Police officials in Krāslava municipality, stopped a Škoda Fabia car on the road with a taxi identification sign and a taxi number plate, as well as with Bolt stickers on the side, which was driven by a Latvian citizen.

During a document check, four Syrian citizens without travel documents, valid visas, or residence permits, were found in the car.

The Latvian citizen was in the border area without a personal identity document and drove a taxi without a driver's license on him.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the carrier regarding the deliberate provision of the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia for two or more persons (Section 285. 1, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law), as well as an administrative case on the absence of a license and breaching the border area rules.
