Je ne regrette rien... French student fined after Rīga 'Can Can' caught on camera

Take note – story published 2 years ago

A French student felt the long arm of la loi Letton after stripping in a Rīga street and prancing around comme l'apres minuit d'un faune as his fellow students provided musical accompaniment with a traffic cone, enthusiastic applause and cries of 'Encore!'.

Captured on camera, and tracked down by Rīga municipal police, the student in question asked le flic with impressive sang froid if he needed to wear a mask, only to be informed that while this was not the case, trousers were compulsory.

A fine of 70 euros was imposed on the offender in connection with the incident, which he will no doubt be able to earn back quickly when he returns to the chorus line at the Folies Bergere, and the full exchange between exotic dancer and officer of the law makes for compulsive viewing, particularly when the relative potential penalties for displaying various different body parts are discussed.

"It should be noted that last week a number of noticeably intoxicated foreign exchange students came to the attention of the Riga Municipal Police before the beginning of the school year. Therefore, taking into account the experience of previous years, the Rīga Municipal Police calls on higher education institutions that admit foreign students to inform students both about the rules of public order in Rīga and about the rules related to reducing the spread of Covid-19," said the police.
