Frost alert in Latvia for next two nights

A frost warning is in effect for the next two nights in Latvia, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

According to LVĢMC, a very strong frost can cause serious damage or even destroy plants. Widespread areas may be affected by the damage. Plant protection measures should therefore be taken as far as possible to minimize frost effects, such as covering or watering plants in the evening before the expected frost.

A yellow level alert will be in place on Wednesday night and morning, and an orange level alert on Thursday night and morning when the frost is wider and harsher.

There will be few clouds in the coming night, no precipitation is expected, and temperatures will drop to -2 to 0 in most of Latvia.

Wednesday will start with sunny weather, but clouds will become more as the day goes on, with some rain in Kurzeme in the evening. Maximum air temperature Wednesday afternoon +8 to +12 degrees, cooler on the coast.

Overnight to Thursday the weather will be even colder, temperatures in eastern Latvia may drop to -5 degrees, but because of the clouds, it will be warmer in many places in Kurzeme and the frost will not affect it as much.

This is the first time the LVGMC has issued a frost warning. This year, weather experts introduced changes to the warning system, incorporating a number of potentially dangerous weather phenomena to keep the public more informed and able to better prepare for weather that can cause damage.
