Participants in a long-distance rally involving high-end motors treated speed limits with apparent disdain, recording speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour in a 70 km/h zone. In that case the BMW car bore Slovenian registration plates. A fine of 680 euros was imposed on the driver for this violation, as well as a ban on exercising the right to drive for 12 months.
In other incidents the driver of a Lamborghini with a German state registration plate was detected driving at 157 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, a Ferrari Portofino F164 driven by a Dutch national was traveling at a speed of 197 km/h in a 90 km/h zone, a Maserati GranTurismo car with a Swiss national registration number was caught doing 132 km/h in a 90 km/h zone, and two Lamborghini Huracán cars were stopped doing 153 km/h and 147 km/h respectively. Drivers received various fines and bans.
The cars bore the livery of a rally that departed Rīga with its final destination being Montenegro. On the way it is due to pass through Warsaw, the High Tatras of Slovakia, Trieste, Ljubljana and Split, where no doubt highway patrol units will also be waiting with their speed guns.
