The Prosecutor's Office has also revoked all safety measures IDB had applied, including a ban on the duties of the Chief of Border Guard. This means he can go back to work.
Press secretary of the Prosecutor's Office, Laura Majevska, told Latvian Radio that Pujāts now has another status, a person against whom criminal proceedings have been initiated.
The Criminal Procedure Law states that if within initiated criminal proceedings information has been obtained that a particular person has committed the criminal offence to be investigated, he/she shall acquire the status of the person against whom criminal proceedings have been initiated. Safety measures may not be applied to that person.
LSM reported that Pujāts had been detained and acquired the status of a suspect in early September.
Last year the IDB detained former Chief of State Border Guard Normunds Garbars. He was detained on suspicion of financial fraud and violations committed during infrastructure development at Latvian-Russian and Latvian-Belarusian border. Court later ruled against taking Garbars into custody.
