Language-learning excellence recognized in Latvia

Madliena secondary school has been recognized for its innovative and effective language teaching at European level.

The school received a certificate of recognition for its Erasmus+ Learning Mobility project "Accredited learning mobility projects for students and school staff in education". As a result of the project, the school comprehensively and creatively focused on language learning and for learning cultural diversity using technology, dictionaries, mutual communication, games and other methods.

The language learning center "Valodu mape" also received a certificate of recognition for the implementation of its  Erasmus+ cooperation partnership project "Play and learn! Learning English in preschool through play and games'.

A third recipient was the association "Radošās Idejas", which was recognized for the implemented Erasmus+ small-scale partnership project "United in culture - reception of Ukrainian refugees". Together with a partner organization from Poland, the association secured gave reugees the opportunity to learn Latvian and Polish languages and culture. The project has also received recognition from the European Commission for providing a positive impact to Ukrainian organizations and people and is included among 15 best examples of Erasmus+ projects from all over Europe.

"I am pleased that diverse and valuable Erasmus+ projects are implemented in Latvia, which provide significant input and support to language learning and teaching," said Zane Gailīte, department director at the State Education Development Agency (VIAA).

VIAA announced the European Mark of Recognition competition for language learning for the 12th time, and this year, its winners were honored at the European Language Festival dedicated to the European Day of Languages, which took place on September 28 at the National Library of Latvia.

The European Language Label is an award encouraging the development of new techniques and initiatives in the field of language learning and teaching, as well as the enhancement of intercultural awareness across Europe. 

The Label is awarded annually or biannually to the most innovative language learning projects in each EU Member State and third country associated to Erasmus+ (previously called Erasmus+ program countries).

By supporting such initiatives at both a local and a national level, the Label seeks, in particular, to raise the standards of language teaching across Europe. A full expanation of the initiative can be found in the video below.
