Work underway rebuilding Mūkusala Promenade in Rīga

It has been 11 months since the reconstruction of the Mūkusala waterfront promenade began, and already part of it has undergone major changes and has a new look. The most technically complex work is the construction of an observation deck opposite the National Library of Latvia, Riga City Council said October 30.

More than 60 years after its construction, the waterfront of Mūkusala Street is taking on a new shape and becoming a landscaped promenade.

Currently, the most important and technically challenging work is taking place between Akmens and Dzelzceļa bridges, opposite the National Library of Latvia, where, after strengthening the embankment and building a new wall, a reinforced concrete viewing platform is being constructed.

It will be a stepped reinforced concrete platform with design lighting and seating surfaces, providing temporary mooring for boats and ships.

The shape of the viewing platform is unique in both size and shape, as will reflect the library's shape in the Daugava River.

Most of the work has been completed on the section of the promenade from the Akmens Bridge to the AB Dambis. Lighting, greenery, an exercise area, and benches have been installed.

Due to uncertainties with the construction of the Rail Baltica railway infrastructure, the municipality is currently unable to implement the works on the Mūkusalas Street promenade, which are planned to take place under the railway bridge and at the mouth of the Kīleveina ditch into the Daugava, the Riga City Council said.

The works will be suspended in winter, but in spring it is planned to continue active construction of the promenade pavement and landscaping, as well as to start construction of pontoons and triangular viewing platforms.

The reconstruction of the Mūkusala waterfront started in December 2023 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.
