The pace last week was the lowest since the second half of April, when vaccines against Covid-19 were still relatively limited in Latvia and only individual priority groups were vaccinated.
Last week around 14,000 people received the first shot against Covid-19, while the vaccination process was completed by around 38,000 people, with a total of around 52,000 injections made and an average vaccination of around 7,500 people a day. In the last few months, these rates were only lower in the week of Midsummer, but these numbers are normally lower on holiday.
On Sunday only 1,672 people received jabs against Covid-19, 391 of whom got the first jab but 1,281 concluded the process, including 753 people getting the Johnson & Johnson vaccine which only needs one dose. Pfizer is most commonly used for first jabs, as well as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Around 623,000 people in Latvia have received the first jab against Covid-19 so far, while around 615,000 people have completed the vaccination process, respectively around 33% of the population have received the first shot and 32.6% have finished the process.
Chair of the vaccination division of the NVD, Eva Juhņēviča, told Latvian Television in an interview that the numbers of last week are 'very small' and speculated that the reason could be the hot weather, causing people to wait. Juhņēviča also said that as of Monday, July 12, a new campaign "Bez vakcīnas nav uzvaras" (No vaccine, no victory) would be launched on TV, radio and other media in order to continue to address the society.
"We are in the middle of July and there is a month and a half left [until the beginning of the school year]. I ask to be united and the campaign slogan also says we must be united because we have one big enemy, the virus," she said.
