Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) National Reference Laboratory officially confirmed the first two cases of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, said Sergejs Ņikišins, head of the laboratory, December 9.

Three more samples are being sequenced and another has recently come in.

It has already been reported that by Wednesday the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) had received information from the laboratory on five samples detecting a number of mutations corresponding to the type of Omicron of the Covid-19 virus.

The final approval shall be given by the National Reference Laboratory after sample sequencing.

All five people have returned from abroad - two from Sweden reported by the SPKC on Monday, two from Norway and one from Britain. The tests were carried out by all persons at the airport. One person is between 20 and 29 years old, three are between 30 and 39 years old and one is aged between 40 and 49. In all cases, the persons were fully vaccinated.

The SPKC calls on residents returning from abroad to Latvia from a trip or work trip to carry out a state-paid test at the airport, thereby protecting themselves and other people.
