The number of sleeping places available for treatment of COVID-19 patients in healthcare facilities in Rīga and regions has been increased to a total of 633, Ilze Vinkele, Minister for Health, tolf Latvian Television November 25.

At the beginning of this month, the Minister stated that the system could accommodate approximately 500 patients in hospitals. On Wednesday, the Minister said that the number of beds is now higher – a total of 633 beds are available for the treatment of COVID-19 patients in Rīga and regions.

The Minister explained that the number of bed sites was increased by hospitals reprofiling their activities. This is at the expense of outpatient healthcare and daily hospital services.

“It comes at the expense of other patients being denied services,” the health minister said.

By Wednesday, November 25, according to the National Health Service, a total of 434 COVID-19 patients were treated in hospitals. The number could continue to rise to 500-600, but it is possible that the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals might reach 1000 at one point.
