Stormy weekend ahead in Latvia

During the weekend, the weather in Latvia will be windy, according to forecasts.

The wind intensification will begin overnight into Saturday, with southwesterly and westerly wind gusts reaching 15-20 meters per second across much of the country, and along the coast up to 25-27 meters per second.

As Saturday progresses, the wind will turn from the northwest and on the coast will gust at around 30 meters per second, 20-24 m/s in the rest of the country.

Such winds can cause damage, breaking individual trees, branches, damaging lighter structures and the roofs of structures.

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢC) has issued an orange alert along the coast and a yellow alert throughout the rest of the country.

Due to the strong wind, water levels will also climb in the estuaries of some rivers. Significant increases in water levels are expected in the Daugava and Gauja, as well as in the lower Lielupe and Venta.

It will also rain a lot during the weekend, with heavy rains expected at times with thunderstorms and hail.

It will rain more in Kurzeme, around Rīga and Jūrmala and in some places in Zemgale, where local rainfall from Friday evening to Sunday evening could reach close to the entire month's climatic norm.

Saturday will still be relatively warm – both night and day, temperatures will be within +10 C to +16 C but it will get significantly cooler on Sunday with minimum overnight temperatures of +2 C to +7 C, and during the day +4 C to +9 C.
