The Latvian ice hockey team defeated the Norwegian national team 2:1 in the world championship game on Wednesday in Rīga, significantly strengthening their chances in the fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The Latvian hockey team, after two losses in the world championship, won against the Czech Republic at 4:3 in overtime on Monday evening, thus slightly improving the chances of making it to the quarter-finals.
After two losses in a row to Canada and then Slovakia, the Latvian national men's ice hockey team will be hoping to find winning ways against the Czechia on Monday, May 15 at the IIHF World Championship.
On Saturday evening Latvian hockey team lost its second game in the world championship to Slovakia, with a result of 1:2.
Latvia's IIHF World Championship tournament got off to a less than ideal start May 12 with a comprehensive defeat at the hands of a powerful Canadian team.
May 12 sees the start of the IIHF World Championship which is taking place this year in Latvia and Finland.
The world ice hockey championship will start on Friday, with Latvia hosting the tournament together with the Finnish city of Tampere. Unlike the championship in Rīga in 2021 during the pandemic, this time spectators will be allowed to attend in person; however, ticket sales are not going very well, Latvian Radio reported May 10.
