Take note – story published 2 years ago

Latvia's second-largest city, Daugavpils, is calling for worldwide photographic talent as part of its bid to become a European Capital of Culture in 2027.

"Daugavpils and the whole Latgale region are working on an application to participate in the final round of the competition 'European Capital of Culture 2027'. The theme of the application from the region is Lingua Franca - a common language. The task of the team of program organizers is to encourage the local community to dialogue and search for a common language through art, culture, social and communicative transformations. The task of the program is not only to show our achievements and positive sides, but to activate the community to find joint solutions to local and global challenges. The need to rethink understatements, historical traumas and stigmatizations prompts us to look for representations of change and contrasts in photography. After all, it is art and culture that can create a dialogue for positive change and change in the cultural landscape of the region," says information about the photcall.

"We invite photographers from all over the world to become participants of Daugavpils 2027 and show the diversity of Latgale - the contrasts, history and people of Daugavpils, to show the region from their own perspective. The photos will be used in the Daugavpils2027 application (BidBook) as well as in the Daugavpils2027 communication materials," an announcement states.

According to the information provided, photos should have been taken not earlier than January 1, 2000. No mention is made of any payment for use of the photos, and photographers should note that when submitting images they need to decide whether to give Daugavpils2027 the right to edit or make changes to their photographs.

As previously reported by LSM, four cities remain in contention to become a Capital of Culture: Daugavpils, Valmiera, Liepāja and Jūrmala. The European Capital of Culture title has been awarded annually since 1985. It is awarded annually to one city in each of two EU Member States. The calendar envisages that in 2027 the title of European Capital of Culture will be awarded to two Member States - Latvia and Portugal.
