Museum Night returns Saturday throughout Latvia

More than 217 Latvian museums and other public organizations will welcome visitors free of charge on May 18, Museum Night, offering diverse events.

This is the 20th year of Latvian museums participating in the International Night of museums, the Ministry of Culture said.

More than 80 cultural sites will open the doors to visitors during Museum Night in Riga and its area, showing an increase in the number compared to last year, when 57 Museum night sights were fixed here.

In 136 regions, interesting activities are organized by municipalities, private museums and non-governmental organizations. Vidzeme visitors will be able to attend events in 38 cultural sites on the evening and night of May 18, in Kurzeme the doors will be opened to visitors in 36 places, in Latgale – 37 places, while in Zemgale – 25 cultural venues.

“Museum night has become a welcome and popular event in 20 years, when in a summer mood around a quarter million residents in Latvia enjoy the diversity of nighttime cultural events. Not only museums, but a wide range of institutions will open the door to visitors during the evening - the number of participants continues to grow and new ones are becoming involved.

"It's also the year that International Museum Day and Museum Night coincide, giving more opportunities to schedule a visit to museums without a rush because, as is customary on International Museums day, many museums will be open for free all-day visits. Museums announce this in their information channels, therefore we invite them to familiarise themselves with the offer of museums and enjoy it,” said Uldis Zariņš, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture for Cultural Policy.

The Museum Night program is available here.
