Meet Latvia's top 10 most influential thinkers

The culture portal Satori.lv on Monday published a top 10 of the most influential Latvian thinkers. The movers and shakers of Latvian thought were chosen by an online vote, with some 1000 people participating.

The criteria for the vote were that the person has to inform society about his or her opinion over various things important to Latvia. Last time a similar vote took place was in 2013.

The top 10 most influential Latvian thinkers, as seen by readers of the Satori culture portal:

  1. Alvis Hermanis - theater director, creative director at the New Riga Theater.
  2. Didzis Melbiksis - journalist, Riga consultant at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
  3. Ivars Ījabs - politics expert, recently made chairman of the DOTS foundation for an open society.
  4. Juris Rubenis - Lutheran pastor, prolific religious author. 
  5. Juris Cālītis - pastor, founder of the Zvannieki safe home. 
  6. Vita Matīsa - expert on politics, international relations and diplomacy.
  7. Inese Zandere - poet, children's books author. 
  8. Pēteris Kļava - popular reanimatologist, opinion expert. 
  9. Harijs Tumans - lecturer, author of books on culture. 
  10. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga - professor and interdisciplinary scholar, respected former President of Latvia.
