Rammstein concert to cause traffic disruption in Rīga

Traffic and travel disruption are expected in the Latvian capital August 6 with German rock band Rammstein due to perform a huge concert on Lucavsala island in the middle of the River Daugava.

Since Monday afternoon, cars have been banned from parking or stopping on Lucavsala, but Tuesday will see even more severe restrictions, not only on road traffic but also on river traffic. Even the owners of allotment gardens on Lucavsala will have to show special passes in order to gain access to their vegetables thanks to the presence nearby of gravelly-voiced industrial rock.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the surrounding area completely if at all possible. Meanwhile an estimated 40,000 concert-goers are advised to use public transport, bicycles or their feet to reach the venue.

With Rammstein's amplification system expected to be turned up to '11', a special reminder for parents of young children was also issued by the State Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) deputy director Māra Dīriņa.

“If you carry your baby in a stroller or carry it, please do not forget to bring soundproof ear defenders with you. Noise can have quite lasting effects,” Dīriņa said.

Local residents might also like to have a pair of ear defenders handy.
