Three cities in contention for 'Youth capital of Latvia'

Until July 28, residents can vote for “Youth capital of Latvia 2023”, the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) told newswire LETA on July 20.

On June 1 this year, following a two-year break, the IZM launched a competition for municipalities “Youth capital of Latvia 2023”. Three applications were received in the competition - from the municipality of Jelgava, the municipality of Bauska and the municipality of Cēsis. After the first round, all three candidates are nominated for the second round of the competition and a ten-day public vote has now been announced, until July 28.

According to IZM, the municipality of Jelgava City once won the title as the first youth capital of Latvia, while the municipality of Cēsis has long cooperated with youth. On the other hand, the municipality of Bauska has particularly focused on cooperation with youth organizations throughout the area.

The winners of the competition will be announced on August 12 in Jūrmala, during the youth festival Kopums (“Together”).

The first youth capital in 2016 was Jelgava. In 2017 it was Liepaja, while Madona municipality won the competition in 2018. In 2019, the title was won by the association of two municipalities - the municipalities of Ikšķile and Olaine, while Ventspils won the title of the youth capital in 2020.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2021 and 2022, the Youth Capital was not selected, but there was an internet vote organised under the “Best at Work with Youth” contest, in which Rēzekne and Jūrmala won.

The competition is organized by IZM in cooperation with the National Youth Council of Latvia and the representation of the European Commission in Latvia.
