Three for the Weekend: Centenary pre-party

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia turns 99 tomorrow! It has certainly been a ride - and it's about to get much wilder next year. But if you're here this weekend, you must absolutely have a taste of what the next one will have in store.

Staro Rīga

The annual ''Staro Rīga'' (Riga Shines) illumination festival will celebrate its tenth birthday on November 18 as Latvia celebrates its own 99th birthday.

An English-language version of the official Staro Riga website is available HERE, but it appears to lack much of the content provided on the Latvian and Russian versions of the website.

As always, there'll be fireworks at the November 11 embankment on Saturday, and Riga will be generally teeming with energy as everyone goes out to celebrate.

Latvia's birthday on LTV

Latvian Television is broadcasting the most important events of the country's birthday party. The highlight will arguably be the celebratory concert at 17.25 tomorrow - tune in online HERE.

Finnish poetry in glass and silver

Meanwhile Finland is already celebrating its centenary. For the event, Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) - a Finnish design icon, will appear for the first time in Latvia, offering visitors the unique opportunity to get acquainted with the master's extensive work from the Finnish Museum of Glass (Riihimäki), and from the private collection of Kyösti Kakkonen.

It's on show at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Old Riga and it's open on Sunday.
